A sharp, pinching, or catching pain when you reach overhead often happens because structures in the shoulder become irritated or compressed as your arm moves into higher positions.
You may notice your shoulder feels fine with your arm down at your side but suddenly becomes painful halfway through raising it overhead. Sometimes the movement feels restricted, weak, or awkward, as if something is blocking the motion. The discomfort may ease once your arm is fully overhead, then return as you lower it back down.
Overhead reaching places more demand on the shoulder than many everyday movements. If the rotator cuff, shoulder blade muscles, or surrounding tissues have been stressed repeatedly, the shoulder may not move as freely as it normally does. That can create the familiar pinching or catching sensation you feel during overhead tasks.
You feel a painful pinch during the middle part of the reach.
You may notice the movement starts comfortably, then suddenly hurts as your arm gets higher. This often happens when irritated rotator cuff structures are squeezed during the overhead motion. The pain is usually most noticeable in a specific range rather than throughout the entire movement.
The same overhead activities repeatedly bring the pain back.
You might feel fine at rest but notice the shoulder grabs every time you reach into a cupboard, hang something up, or lift an object overhead. Repeated overhead use can prevent the area from fully settling down between activities, causing the same painful motion to return day after day.
Pain that keeps returning during movement, after activity, or once the body cools down often means the injured tendons, ligaments, muscles, or nearby connective tissues are still recovering from repeated strain. When an area stays tight, restricted, or painful with normal movement, the tissues may not be moving or recovering as smoothly as they should.
Repeated stress can also leave circulation slower around the injured area, making it harder for oxygen, nutrients, and excess tissue fluids to move normally through the tissues. Over time, this can leave the area feeling stiff, weak, tight, or easier to aggravate during repeated movement and activity.
For acute injuries with pain, swelling and inflammation, some people apply Acute Sinew Liniment to help relieve pain, reduce swelling and inflammation, and increase blood flow to injured tissues to support faster recovery and a quicker return to activity. Some also use it alongside Sinew Herbal Ice to help speed up the recovery process and restore normal circulation and range of motion.
For ongoing pain, stiffness, or slow-healing areas after swelling and inflammation have subsided, some people apply Chronic Sinew Liniment to help relieve pain, stimulate circulation, and support recovery in overstretched tendons and ligaments. Some also pair it with Sinew Injury Poultice to further stimulate circulation and support deeper tissue recovery in areas with persistent pain and stiffness.
To warm up muscles, reduce tightness, and improve flexibility before or after activity, some people apply Sinew Sports Massage Oil to help increase circulation, prepare muscles for movement, relieve tightness, and support flexibility after activity.

Persistent, severe, or worsening symptoms should be evaluated by a qualified healthcare professional.
This often happens when shoulder structures become irritated or compressed during higher arm positions while remaining comfortable at lower positions.
It can be. Rotator cuff irritation is one of the most common reasons pain appears during overhead reaching.
A catching sensation can occur when irritated shoulder structures do not move smoothly through the overhead range of motion.
Reducing painful overhead movements temporarily may help prevent repeated aggravation while the shoulder recovers.
You should seek evaluation if the pain is severe, worsening, causes significant weakness, or does not improve over time.
• Acute Sinew Liniment — applied during the acute stage of injury to help relieve pain, reduce swelling and inflammation, and increase blood flow to injured tissues after a recent strain, sprain, bruise, or contusion
• Sinew Herbal Ice — applied during the acute stage of injury to help speed up the recovery process and restore normal circulation and range of motion
• Chronic Sinew Liniment — applied during the chronic stage of injury to help relieve pain, stimulate circulation, and support recovery in overstretched tendons and ligaments
• Sinew Injury Poultice — applied during the chronic stage of injury to help further stimulate circulation and support deeper tissue recovery in areas of persistent pain and stiffness
• Sinew Sports Massage Oil — applied before and after activity to help increase circulation, prepare muscles for movement, relieve tightness, and improve flexibility
